<image:caption>This piece establishes the social commentary in the series: the lack of trust in today’s media. Today, trust in journalism has been reported to be at its all time low. Thus, I manifested a lack of trust in the media as a series of viruses creeping into and taking over the newspaper. I utilized shiny white paint marker to render the viruses glossy—to suggest that there is something enticing about the viruses entering the media, as the facts of a story are occasionally skewed by ulterior motives for entertainment purposes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Design - Art Portfolio</image:title>
<image:caption>The second piece illustrates how the lack of trust in media is a global problem, largely due to the globalized nature of 21st century life. In this piece, I created a map of the world composed of newspaper to manifest how society is defined by the stories and events that transpire in our lives, which is captured by the media. However, I replaced the oceans with a black backdrop and three impending viruses, almost like planets orbiting the earth to suggest that there is something ill looming beneath the stories.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Design - Art Portfolio</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece illustrates how journalism is an integral aspect of our lives. We consume the news like we do our coffee or tea in the morning, as both are institutions in many people's daily routines. This piece illustrates the information of a news story being evaporated away to highlight how incomplete information and low trust in journalism renders stories meaningless to readers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Design - Art Portfolio</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is a continuation of Morning Coffee, I continue the metaphor of coffee or tea being comparable to the media we consume. However, in this piece, I replaced the sweet sensation of sugar or milk, often added to coffee, with black sludge. This is to manifest how the facts of a story are like the base of coffee or tea in that they are essentially the same for all. In reality, people add milk or sugar to customize their coffee, however, here the only option is the black sludge, to comment on how objectivity in today’s media is nearly impossible.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece comments on the interaction of 21st Century technology and journalism. In an increasingly digital age, journalism spreads instantaneously with social media platforms propelling news to spread as the story unfolds. This piece includes excerpts from 3 different news sources describing the same incident, to illustrate how quickly a story can be distorted because of the immediate spread of journalism with technology.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Design - Art Portfolio</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is indicative of the start of a shift in the series’ works. Here, rather focusing on the problem, I shift focus onto the solution. I hand wrote the words of Barack Obama’s 2008 primary speech in the background, as they were words of unity, with the famous line “we are not as divided as our politics suggest.” These words, layered above an image of people unifying, evoke the theme of unity. However, encroaching upon this unity is the news, twisted into vines confining the words, suggesting that the polarized media is part of what causes division in today’s world. The piece comes to closure with a message of hope, underlining how in spite of the division today, the media was not always that way, and there is hope for ameliorating the trust in the media.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece aims to contrast the first piece of the series. In the first image, viruses encroach upon and pollute the news. However here, flowers take root in the once corrupt news to illustrate a new beginning and the media changing from a disease-breeding environment to a healthy one suitable for life, mirroring the hope for the growth of journalistic integrity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The above sketch is my updated sketch for the places.php web page. Here, I also eliminated the boxes around the text to make for a cleaner look. The clean look is helpful for my target audience, as most people in my target audience are between the ages of 18–22, and thus, are well aquatinted with contemporary art trends that support this style, such as minimalism. To further bolster the minimalist, breathable look of the website, I added a margin of about 100px to the left and right of the main text on the web page.</image:caption>

<image:title>Design - The Cornell Wanderer - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my final sketch for places.php. It is similar to the previous sketch I had, but this sketch illustrates how the place names will be significantly more prominent than the description text. I made this design choice to make the different places abundantly clear to users, so that if they want to skim the website they would still get the most important information from this page (the different places). Knowing the place names is important, because each place is a different tag that the users can filter the image gallery by.</image:caption>

<image:title>Design - The Cornell Wanderer - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my final sketch for the image gallery page. This sketch illustrates important design updates I made, in how I added a modal for uploading a file, and a hover-over dropdown for filtering by tag. I decided to make uploading a file a modal, because the “Browse” and “Upload File” buttons necessary for this process diminished the clean, modern look of the gallery page. Furthermore, it appeared as if there were too many “submit” like buttons when they were not stored in a modal. I also decided to make the “filter by tags” a hover-over dropdown with the form for filtering contained inside of the dropdown for the same reason.</image:caption>

<image:title>Design - The Cornell Wanderer - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The above image is my updated sketch for the home page. I changed the design to support a cleaner, polished look by eliminating the the boxes that were previously around the paragraphs. Furthermore, I decided to rebrand the “images” page to be a “gallery” page. I decided to do this to ensure that users know they can anticipate finding the functions of normal image galleries on that web page (such as the ability to look through photos, sort them based upon certain tags, and add/delete photos)</image:caption>

<image:title>Design - The Cornell Wanderer - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The above image is my sketch for what it will look like to users when they click on an image. I would like to have it so that the other images in the image gallery are no longer visible (a white/beige background replaces them) and then the tags for the image would be visible underneath the image. The three dots above the image to the right reveal another menu which gives the users several options: to edit, copy, or delete the picture. I only made these options available to users through this menu to discourage them from deleting images, as that would lead them to not use my gallery platform as much. Furthermore, this style mirrors that of other image gallery platforms, such as Instagram and Google Photos.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The sketch above is my final sketch for index.php. I decided to add a picture (related to traveling) to the web page to make it feel less text-heavy to users, and make it easier to read the content.</image:caption>
